San Antonio AirLIFE is a regional air medical transport
provider licensed by the
Texas Department
of State Health Services. Helicopter transport of
the critically ill and injured is
available 24 hours a day/365 days
a year in a 150 mile radius around
San Antonio.
Three Bell 430 helicopters
are
used to perform both inter-hospital
transfers and emergency scene transports
in conjunction with local EMS agencies.
Requests for air transport are accepted
from authorized hospital personnel
for transfers of patients from a lower
level of care to a higher or equal
level of care.
Requests are also accepted from EMS
agencies, police and sheriff's
departments, and fire department
personnel. Flights are accepted
without discrimination due to race,
creed, sex, color, age, religion,
national origin, ancestry, handicap,
or ability to pay. Emergency scene responses
or requests, in the AirLIFE service
area, which involve a patient with
a potentially life threatening illness
or injury, are accepted without prescreening
for the ability to pay.
The AirLIFE medical crew consists
of a Registered Nurse/Paramedic team
for every patient mission. The medical
flight crews provide advanced life
support for a wide variety of patients
from adult to pediatric age suffering
from varied medical diagnosis.
Additionally, the
AirLIFE medical crews accompany specialty
teams from
University Hospital,
Methodist
Children's Hospital,
Santa Rosa
Children's Hospital, and
Wilford Hall
Medical Center.
The medical crews performs assessments
and intervene with advanced skills
when required by written protocols
or with the direction of medical control
physician. San Antonio AirLIFE also
provides transport for organ retrieval
teams when aircraft are available.
Both San Antonio AirLIFE medical crew members
accompany these flights as safety
officers.
